FAQ

Is Naturopathic Medicine right for me?

Monique would invite you to explore the sections of this website About Naturopathic Medicine to learn how most people can benefit from this type of care.  If you are not sure if Naturopathic Medicine is a good fit for you and your health concerns, Monique would be pleased to discuss this with you in a complimentary 15-minute “Meet the ND” appointment.

How long does it take to see results?

There are many factors that will influence the time it takes for you to get relief from your symptoms.  Because Naturopathic Medicine relies on the body’s ability to heal rather than the suppression or elimination of symptoms, this process can take more time when compared to conventional medicine.  In order to make effective and lasting changes to your health, it is best to commit to at least three visits, although many patients may see benefits sooner.

Is Naturopathic Medicine scientific?

You might be surprised by how much of Naturopathic Medicine is based on the most current scientific understanding of the body and disease.  We use lab tests and physical exams to arrive at diagnoses but approach treatment with a unique philosophy and natural tools.  Many treatments used in Naturopathic Medicine are based on hundreds or thousands of years of history and wisdom.  However, there is also a substantial and growing amount of research to support these therapies.  Studies have been completed looking at individual treatments (such as fish oil supplementation for the prevention of heart disease) as well as looking at Naturopathic care as a whole.  The results are showing that it is effective, safe and cost-effective.  Dr. Monique is a unique Naturoapthic Doctor because in addition to clinical work she is also a researchers.  Check out the Blog and Twitter feed to learn more about Naturopathic Medical Research as well as the About page for some of Dr. Monique's recent scientific publications.

Is Naturopathic Medicine safe?

Naturopathic Medicine has an excellent record of safety.  This is largely due to its use of gentle, natural, non-toxic, non-invasive treatments.  Naturopathic Doctors are trained to recognize when a treatment could interact with another medication or cause harm due to another health condition.   Also, Naturopathic Doctors are trained to recognize conditions that are outside their scope of practice and will refer to another health care provider when appropriate.

Can I see my Medical Doctor and a Naturopathic Doctor at the same time?

Absolutely! An integrative approach to health care is a great idea because different practitioners have different strengths and tools to help you.  Naturopathic therapies rarely conflict with conventional medical treatments and Naturopathic Doctors are trained to identify and prevent possible interactions.

Why should I see a Naturopathic Doctor when I can get supplement advice at the health food store or in health articles?

While these supplements may be helpful, sometimes they are not the most effective strategy for an individual and at worst, can cause harm due to an interaction with other medications or illnesses.  By seeing a Naturopathic Doctor, your prescription is based on a detailed analysis of your health history and present illness.  One of the principles of Naturopathic Medicine is “To heal the whole person through individualized treatment”.  This means that your treatment plan will be customized to the unique characteristics of you and your health concern and will address all aspects of your health that may be contributing to your illness.

Is Naturopathic Medicine covered by OHIP?

While Naturopathic medicine is not covered by Ontario Health Insurance, it is covered by almost all extended health care plans.  Some plans also provide coverage for remedies prescribed by a Naturopathic Doctor.
